Captain America: Brave New World Review
Where should I even start with this film? I have very mixed emotions about thus because fans were concerned about this film during the filming with the constant reshoots. Let me just say that the reshoots improved nothing about this film and I actually think it hurt the quality of the film more than anything. For those that are wondering: yes this does feel like a sequel to The Incredible Hulk but without Bruce Banner in it. Fans were asking for a solo Hulk film w/Mark Ruffalo for years now and you decided to wrap up loose ends from the original film 17 years later in Anthony Mackie's first major MCU project?
Sam Wilson and his new Falcon AKA Joaquin Torres have excellent chemistry together. I really love how they made Sam stand out as a leader and have his own identity instead of being dubbed as “Steve's replacement.” The action sequences, the score and the heightened drama between Ross and Sam were pretty good. Let's get to the bad: spotty CGI, the villain, Ruth wasn't needed and it struggles between being an Incredible Hulk sequel or a standalone Sam Wilson Captain America film.
Now let's talk about one of my biggest issues with the film: the Israeli character known as Ruth. Marvel received major backlash during the production which caused reshoots. However, it's hard for me to tell considering she has more screen time than Harrison Ford's transformation into Red Hulk. Her turning out to be a black Widow spy did absolutely nothing to the story. Instead they could have replaced her with Yelena (Florence Pugh) or even a Wakandian spy and their wouldn't have been an issue.
I feel bad for Anthony Mackie because he deserved a lot better than this. The film starts off on a good note and somewhere in the 40 or so minute mark it becomes, ‘Incredible Hulk 2'. The villain is a major disappointment because he talks a big game but we hardly see him in the film and when we do he hardly does anything. Now I don't hate this film but i’m not going to argue with anyone that does because I understand their frustration.
