One Battle After Another Review
One Battle After Another is not only another great performance from Leonardo Dicaprio but also the lovely women such as Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall and up incoming actor Chase Infiniti. Leonardo and Teyana Taylor play “Ghetto" Pat Calhoun and Perfidia Beverly Hills who are both apart of a revolutionary group known as the French 75. When Bob Fergunson (Formerly known as Pat Calhoun) discovers his daughter, Willa is kidnapped by a corrupt military official he must come out of retirement to rescue her.
I have never hated a character more than Sean Penn as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw. He's a bigoted, narcissist, arrogant prick to say the least. Sean Penn is excellent at being so unlikable because a hero can only be just as good as the villain.
In 2023 Teyana Taylor had one of the best films of the year in A Thousand And One. If you want to see how great Teyana Taylor is I suggest go watch that film as well because she is just as great in this. She plays off of Leonardo Dicaprio really well and I would actually like to see them in another film together because of their chemistry with one another. Teyana is funny and she does a great job at being vulnerable. While, Teyana might not have a lot of screen time she doesn't leave a bad impression at all with the time that she is given.
My only problem with her character is that she's in it for about 20 or so minutes and just disappears. Not only but that the oversexualization of her character and her unaliving a black man made me feel uneasy. For someone whose apart of a group that is supposed to fight against white supremacy was it really the best idea to have her character unalive a black man and have her comrades be arrested/unalived?
Before this film I have never heard of Chase Infiniti but after seeing her performance I think that everyone should be on the lookout for her. Chase stands on her own two feet with giants like Regina Hall and Leonardo Dicaprio as her father. I would actually go as far to say that she is the stand out in this film. There is no better way for people to remember your name than starring in a Paul Thomas Anderson film.
One Battle After Another is not only one of the best movies of the year but this film was needed for what America is going through right now. Even though this film tackles heavy subjects such as: postpartum depression, fatherhood, fetishism of black women, white supremacy and immigration it is also really funny as well. Their were several times where my whole theater was laughing at the ridiculousness of Leonardo Dicaprio not remembering certain things from his past because of his excessive weed smoking. I wouldn't be surprised if this film got in at this upcoming award season. Also, thank you Paul Thomas Anderson for respecting pronouns.
I was really expecting to see more Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor but they are still excellent with the material they are given. Yes, Leonardo Dicaprio is always great, however, Chase Infiniti is the star of this film. For your first major film performance to be alongside one of the best actors ever would be very nerve-wracking but Chase holds her own very well.
