Superman (Non-Spoiler) Review

Where do I even start with this? After watching one of my anticipated films of this year I would like to say that I wasn't disappointed with the new Superman film. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have excellent chemistry as one of the best couples in comic history in Clark Kent/Lois Lane. I think the problem with Amy Adam's Lois Lane is that they didn’t really give her much of anything other than being a, “journalist.” Which is more on the writing than anything.

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is everything she is supposed to be: beautiful, sarcastic, witty and she asks all the hard hitting questions. Meanwhile, David Corenswet is everything that was missing from Superman in the live action films: charming, brave, caring and sympathetic. Throughout the film we even see Superman go out of his way to save a squirrel from getting stomped on. That's what a lot of people seem to forget about Superman's character is that he's much more than just his strength.

When we first saw the teaser for this film a lot of fans were worried that Superman would get overshadowed by the Justice Gang. Let me be the first to say that is not the case at all. James Gunn said even though their are other heroes in this film that it would still be centered around Superman and it is. The Justice Gang along with Krypto don't feel forced into the plot and when we see them their essential to the story. The clashing personalities work really well with each other and seeing Guy Garder's cocky, brash, prick attitude clash with Superman is very entertaining.

Can we talk about the MVP of the film? That being Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific. Edi Gathegi was really given the sort in of the stick the last time he played a comic book hero. Not only is he a badass but seeing his intelligence being displayed up there with Lex Luthor was really incredible from a fan of the character. He's one of the smartest characters in DC comics and I really hope to see more of him because he had more whole theater applauding for him.

It's official: Nicholas Hoult is my new favorite Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor is supposed to be a selfish, self-centered, narcissist, billionaire with a God like complex. Unfortunately, the live action films have done a piss poor job at portraying Lex Luthor… until now that is. Nicholas Hoult version of Lex Luthor is the best live action depiction of him since Smallville. As Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult is suave, selfish, pretty much any bad word you can think about calling Lex Luthor, he is that.

From the pacing, the score, cinematography, the incredible VFX, supporting cast and Mr. Terrific stealing the show this film is excellent. Yes, DC is back and better than ever. This film feels and looks like a Superman film. With all the terrible things happening in the world right now, this is exactly what we needed. So thank you, James Gunn for reminding us how awesome Superman is.
