The Drama Review
The Drama is the new romantic drama starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya by the popular studio A24. This has been one of my most anticipated films of the year. But what exactly is The Drama about and was it worth the hype? Premise: A happily engaged couple is put to the test when a dark secret from the soon-to-be wife's past comes to the surface.
While Charlie (Robert Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) are planning their wedding with a couple of friends of theirs (Mike and Rachel) they decide to play a game confessing the worse things that they have done. Emma reluctant to confess hers puts a huge damper on not only her friendship with Rachel but also her relationship with Charlie. When the secret is out on the table we see a decent into madness with Charlie because he can't stop thinking about Emma's secret. Even though Emma's secret is pretty dark it's nothing compared to her “Best friends” secret. Speaking of her best friend…
Mike and Rachel are the best friends Charlie and Emma. When they find out Emma's secret they treat her like she's a total stranger on the street. In my opinion both of them are complete hypocrites because their secrets were just as bad if not worse (especially Rachel's) than Emma's. Rachel is the type of white person that goes, “I'm not racist my best friend/husband is black.”
Rachel and Mike's relationship is a great showing of how BIPOC people can still experience micro/macroagressions even if they're in a relationship with a white person. It's obvious who wears the pants in the relationship and it obviously isn't Mike because he let’s Rachel walk all over him. Hell, Mike didn't even stand up for Emma when Rachel unleashed on her for her secret.
When Emma's “secret” gets out Charlie treats Emma just as badly as Mike and Rachel do if not worse. Charlie definitely comes off as a loser because not only does he gaslight Emma for her past but when he does stand up for her (if you want to call it that) he doesn't do a very good job at it. I’m still a little conflicted about the ending seeing how everyone that treated Emma like crap didn't get their karma.
