The Woman In The Yard Review
Yes, I am aware I'm late when it comes to my thoughts on this film seeing how it came out at the tail end of March. But better late than never, right? Now for the past couple of months I've seen mixed reactions when it comes to this film. A lot of people have compared it to the horror film, The Babadook which also tackles grief and depression. After seeing this film the only thing that is similar about the two films is the themes it tackles (grief and depression) and it has a dog in it.
Danielle Deadwyler plays Ramona a Widow who lost her husband in a car accident that also put her on crutches. It's just a regular day with her son, Taylor and daughter Annie when they are approached by a mysterious woman in their yard with supernatural abilities. While, The Babadook is about a demonic Demon brought to life from a book that mentally tortures the individual, Woman In The Yard the monster itself is Ramona. From my perspective the woman represents a repressed version of Ramona that wants to take her own life and is tormenting herself and her family for not taking accountability for her actions that led to her husband’s death.
I’m not a fan of Blumhouse films so I tried to go into this film open minded. A lot of films produced by Blumhouse are poorly written films with bad production all over it. To my surprise I enjoyed this film way more than I thought I would. The cinematography is beautiful and the score is truly haunting.
One thing I really enjoyed about this film is that the more intense the family drama gets inside the house the closer the woman outside gets closer to the house. Not only that but the POV shots in this film are really well done. It makes it more haunting seeing the characters fight against their fears. The woman preys on the families inner weaknesses causing them to turn on each other and proceeds to pick them off one by one.
The hate for this film is extremely forced and not warranted at all. For a Blumhouse film I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Like I said it may be influenced by The Babadook by discussing mental health but they handle them in completely separate ways. This is a great example of not listening to people's opinions before watching something yourself.
