Oscar Snubs: The Lighthouse
The Lighthouse is the second directorial film of horror director Robert Eggers. It was released in theaters on October 18th, 2019 and made $18 Million on a $11 Million budget. Not only is The Lighthouse one of the best films produced by A24, but it is also one of the best films of the 2010's as well.
Thomas Howard (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) are two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. The only category that this film received a nomination for was Best Cinematography which it definitely deserved because this film is beautiful to look at. However, after watching this film for the first time it amazes me how this didn't get into Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Male Actor In A Lead Role & Best Male Actor In A Supporting Role.
Post-Twlight Robert Pattinson has really flexed his acting chops. He has been in two of the best A24 films to date: Good Time and The Lighthouse. As Thomas Howard, Robert Pattinson displays so much anger, pain, distrust and agony. If anyone has any doubt in their minds about Robert Pattinson's acting because of those Twlight films I suggest you watch this film.
There are a lot of films that tell a great story narratively and cinematically, Lighthouse happens to be one of those films. Every single shot tells a story before the characters even say a single word. If this movie was treated as a silent film I wouldn’t have mind because the score is amazing and it's beautifully shot. The Witch may have been Robert Eggers first directorial film but in my opinion this is the actual film that put Robert Eggers on the map.
Not only is Lighthouse one of the best films produced by A24 but it's one of the best films of the 2010's. The performances are great, cinematically it's beautiful to look at and it cemented Robert Eggers as horror director. We all know that the three genre films that the Academy doesn't respect are: Comedy, Comic Books and Horror. Over the past few years it does seem as if the horror genre is finally getting the respect that it deserves considering it's been overlooked for so long. If anyone has seen Lighthouse what are your thoughts on the film and do you think that it got snubbed?
