Will Sinners Sweep During Awards Season?
Since the release of Sinners back I'm April no other film has had the amount of cultural success as Sinners has. Sinners is a modern day classic that will and should be talked about in schools. This modern day take on vampires mixing blues w/colonialism and white supremacy has still remained a huge talking point. But with Award season coming up it would be an underestimate to say that Sinners has been doing, “decent” when it comes to the films nominations.
Sinners Is A Masterclass In Filmmaking
One thing that Ryan Coogler is known for is his collaboration with BIPOC women. Autumn Durald Arkapaw is the first woman cinematographer to shoot a feature film in 65 millimeter in IMAX format. Not only that but in general Autumn is the first cinematographer to blend 65 millimeter and Ultra Panvision 276. Autumn has work with Ryan Coogler in the past and after watching Sinners several times I think Ryan should keep her as his cinematographer.
Hearing Autumn talk about how she was able to accomplish a lot of the shots in the movie under difficult circumstances with Kevin McCarthy was so interesting to listen too. Sinners is such a beautiful film to look at because of the hard work that Autumn put into making every single shot count. For example, hearing Autumn discuss the cigarette pass between Smock/Stack was so intriguing because it's something that might look easy to shoot but is extremely difficult. Hopefully, this will open the doors to more woman Cinematographers shooting big budget films.
The Ensemble Cast Is Amazing
Not a single actor was wasted in this film at all. Every single character plays a role in the story and we actually get time to care about them before the horror aspect comes into play. You have a legend like Delroy Lindo giving a spectacular performance as a grieving older man who is drinking his pain away, while you have newcomers like Miles Caton knocking his first major role out of the park.
By the end of the film it truly feels like everyone got a closing chapter to their characters. With so many stellar performances in this film it leads me to ask this question: why haven't Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo and Jack O'Connell got any award nominations? Jack O'Connell gives one of the best musical performances (just ask Christopher Nolan about it) w/Rocky Road To Dublin. Delroy Lindo monologue in the car with Stack and Preacherboy should be reason enough to give him a nomination for Best Actor In A Supporting Role.
It Has One Of The Best Soundtracks Of The Year
Aside from Kpop Demon Hunters, Sinners score/music is the backbone of the film. Not only is the music emotionally moving and catchy but the score is very haunting/terrifying which plays into the vampire aspect really well. Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler are the perfect Director/Composer combo. Black Panther still remains one of the best movie soundtracks ever and you might as well add this film to the list of great movie soundtrack/scores. Ludwig Göransson so great at understanding and respecting the music of the black community.
It's Michael B. Jordan's Best Performance To Date
In my opinion Michael B. Jordan should have been an awards contender for Creed, Black Panther and Just Mercy. I think the turning point in his acting career was actually Just Mercy. Before Michael played a lawyer in said film with Jamie Foxx, people just thought that Michael was a handsome dude with decent acting skills and no one disagreed with that more than me.
This might be an odd comparison but hear me out with this one. Sinners is Michael B. Jordan's Malcolm X performance. When news broke that Denzel Washington was playing Malcolm X everyone said the same thing: “they don't like alike” to “Denzel isn't good enough to play Malcolm” and ultimately he shut every single one of his haters up. As Smoke/Stack twins Michael really displays that he cares about about the craft about making the audience tell the difference between the twins from their demeanor and how they handle trauma but also that he can do character acting when he needs too.
Ryan Coogler Is One Of The Best Director's Of The Last Decade
Everyone keeps talking about Paul Thomas Anderson receiving an Academy Award for One Battle After Another, however, there has still yet to be a black director to actually win in said category. Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Barry Jenkins and so many more have been snubbed by the Academy for ANOTHER white male Director. Hopefully, this award season we can finally see a phenomenal director who happens to be black win in this category. Ryan Coogler is one of the best modern day storytellers not just through dialogue but also through music, production/costume design and also visually as well.
What does everyone think? Are you rooting for the success of Sinners during Award season? What do you think of Ryan Coogler as a director and do you think he has a chance of winning Best Director at the Academy Awards? I’d love to hear everyone's thoughts.
