Top 10 Best Movies of 2024
10. Monkey Man
Some people say that this film is the, “Indian John Wick”. That would be simplifying it because Monkey Man offers much more than that. Monkey Man tackles themes of trauma, genocide and religion while displaying the beautiful culture of India with badass action sequences. I felt more emotionally connected to the story and the main lead as opposed to John Wick.
9. The Wild Robot
The Wild Robot really brought me back to my childhood with being emotionally connected to films I watched growing up. Films such as Finding Nemo, Kung Fu Panda, The Incredibles, Toy Story, etc. The soundtrack, score, voice cast and animation are all spectacular. This film really tugged on my heart strings.
8. Outside
Netflix rarely is successful when it comes to their original films. However, with the zombie Apocalypse film Outside they just so happened to strike gold. This is about a loving husband/father who tries desperately to defend his family from the infected but it seems that his family needs protection from him. Imagine The Shining and World War Z had a baby and this would be the result of it.
The suspense building is great, along with the cinematography, the action and the family dynamic works really well. I definitely wasn't expecting this to be in my top 10 considering Netflix doesn't make a lot of great original film projects but here we are.
7. Smile 2
Goddamn I love Smile 2! I wasn't a huge fan of the original Smile film but this film eclipses the original. While, it has the same concept as the original the themes it tackles are different. The first film tackles mental health, while the sequel tackles the struggles of celebrity fame and substance abuse.
Naomi Scott really played a tragic popstar as Skye Riley as she tries to recover from her substance abuse and doesn't want to let anyone else down around her. The jumpscares felt a lot more scarier than the first, the cinematography and VFX are great, along w/the practical effects, the opening sequence, the score, the costume design and Naomi Scott deserves an Oscar for her performance.
6. Civil War
A lot of people were disappointed by the lack of focus on the WAR part of the film. I might be in the minority by saying this: but this film lived up to the hype for me at least. Yes, it would have been nice to get more backstory about the actual wat going on but the core of the story is about the four journalists. I was invested in the story, characters and I really like how the film is shot from a journalists POV from seeing what they see on the scene.
5. Transformers One
I’m not the only one that thought this film was going to be terrible because the marketing was also terrible. The marketing did no favor for this film because it's spectacular. My brother took me to see this film after he saw it and loved it. The Score, humor, voice cast, soundtrack and the tone of the film are what really made me love this film.
Not only is this one of the best films of the year but so far this is the best Transformers film as well. It's sad this didn’t receive the proper marketing because it's a great story building film with fleshed out characters.
4. Nosferatu
I am officially a fan of Robert Eggers after this film. This film is shot so beautifully I can’t wait to figure out how a lot of these shots were accomplished when it comes out on physical media. Personally, I will be very upset if this misses out at the Academy Awards because it should certainly get into two of the acting categories, cinematography, director, picture, costume and production design. Congrats to Robert Eggers for making the camera work feel like a character.
3. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die
This is my favorite Bad Boys film out of the franchise so far. From the action sequences, VFX, the Reggie scene, everything. Definitely a great closing to a beloved franchise and if we receive a spin-off with Reggie and Mike's son I wouldn’t be upset with that.
2. Dune: Part Two
A lot of people say that the first Dune was a little boring. Now while I sort of agree, this one turned up the entertainment value all the way and didn't disappoint. None of the performances felt phoned in, the cinematography is beautiful, the world building makes the sequel feel like a much bigger world than the previous film. I can literally go on and on about how spectacular this film was considering I saw it twice in theaters.
1. Wicked
Not normally a fan of musicals but considering this is a beloved Broadway play I couldn't resist. From the social commentary of racial stereotypes, microaggressions, the soundtrack made me see this twice. Thank God, no one sang in my theater because I didn't know any of the songs going in and their wasn’t a song I disliked at all. Now I can't wait to see what happens for the sequel.
