Opus Review

Opus is an A24 Horror/Thriller film starring Ayo Edebiri as Ariel a young writer who is invited to a compound to interview legendary pop star Moretti after his mysterious disappearance 30 years ago. Ariel soon finds her trapped in this sick pop stars twisted mind games. I went into this film with no context at all so I wasn't sure what to expect.

This film was giving me major deja vu due to the fact that it's a combination of Midsommar and Get Out. Both films tackle the same subject (white supremacy) but in different ways. Opus subject matter is different where the film tackles Stan culture with celebrities and classicism. However, it feels like the subject matter is all over the place and in the long run I don’t think that this will have the same cultural impact as a They Cloned Tyrone, Midsommar, Get Out or even a I Watched The TV Glow.

There are elements in this film that work and some that don't. I personally think that comedian actors work better as genre actors as opposed to regular actors trying to get into comedy. This film does a great job at making you feel uneasy with this cult and the killing scenes are brutal. Mixed bag but it still has it moments here and there.
