Supergirl Review

So the new entry into James Gunn DCU has now been released. Milly Alcock from House of Dragon made a big splash with her drunken appearance in last year's James Gunn Superman film before getting her own solo film. Supergirl is based on one of the best DC comics and that is Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow by Tom King. Premise: When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.

Let me start off with the pros because I don’t really have a whole lot of positive things to say about this film. First of all, Milly Alcock is excellent as Kara/Supergirl. She brings a lot of vulnerability to her while also showcasing her physical strength as well. One of my favorite things about Superman and Supergirl is how they were both raised and what the letter ‘S’ on their suit means to them.

While the ‘S’ on the suit means, “hope” for Clark, to Kara she is still trying to figure out what it means to her seeing how she wasn't raised on earth like Clark was so she doesn't have an emotional attachment to the people of earth. Secondly, Kara going to different planets with Red suns so she can drown her sorrows away of watching her love ones and planet die is heart wrenching.

Now let's discuss what everyone was waiting for: Lobo. Jason Momoa has been lobbying to play Lobo for years (even before he played Aquaman) and his dream has come true. Lobo was originally supposed to be in the Woman of Tomorrow comic but he was ultimately scrapped and replaced with Ruthye when Tom King decided that Lobo didn't fit the story. While Lobo doesn't necessarily fit the narrative of the story in the film you can tell Momoa is having a lot of fun playing the character.

Now let's get to the downsides of the film. The villain in the comic/film is Krem of the Yellow Hill who is the man responsible for killing the father of Ruthye. Look at the picture of Krem from the comic compared to what he looks like in the movie. Compared to what he looks like in the comic Krem in the film looks like a extra from a Mad Max movie. Not just that but he's just a lame villain who feels more like a foot soldier to the main villain as opposed to being the actual villain.

In the comic Krem joins a group of space pirates called the, Brigands who invade planets and kill everyone in their wake while also looting the planet for it's resources. Woman Of Tomorrow portrays the Brigands as violent mercenaries who instill fear throughout the galaxy, while the film they feel like nothing more than henchmen to a much bigger villain that we don't see. The whole message of the movie is, “revenge is bad” but the final act contradicts that same message.

I understand that not everything from the comic was going to be adapted and that's fine because everything that gets adapted goes through changes. However, if you don’t keep the spirit of the source material that you're adapting then it's not going to work. With that being said the color grading is hideous and the CGI is just laughable. I really wanted the movie to capture the very vibrant colors that is showcased in the book but the look and the special effects feel unfinished.

Eve Ridley is a new actor on the scene and you can kind of tell. I think for her first major project she did well. There are times where you have to go, “what did she say”? Because she is speaking so quickly. A lot of people have been too harsh on Eve but seeing how she is new to the industry she isn't going to hit a homerun immediately out of the gate.

If you're looking at this film as a adaptation it's a 2 out of 10, but if you're looking at it as a stand-alone film who hasn't read the source material it's a 3 out of 10. This movie clocks in at almost 100 minutes and it should have easily been 2 and a half hours. Incels on the internet were going to hate on this movie regardless because they were never touched by a woman in their lives so screw them.

This movie isn't bad because it's a female lead action film or that Milly Alcock isn't attractive (which is a stupid statement because she's gorgeous), it's bad because it's just not a good movie. There are much better female action films (Wonder Woman, Kill Boksoon, They Will Kill You, Atomic Blonde, Kill Bill, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, etc.) other than this. Milly Alcock did the best with what she was given but hopefully next time the script is better and the CGI/color grading looks completely done.

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️ out of 5
